You're thinking about this the right way. The N811 only used 12V for its controls, but the N8DC runs its compressor on 12V, so it needs a much heavier supply. In most installs, the existing wire isn't big enough. Follow the wire gauge and fuse size in the N8DC installation manual based on your wire run length, and run the new wire as directly from the battery or 12V distribution panel as you can. Voltage drop is the most common cause of compressor fridge problems. Also see our post on replacing the N811/ N821/ N841.
