You're right that it's optional. That switch just turns the cooling unit fans on when the back of the fridge gets hot and off when it cools down. With it bypassed, the fans run all the time. That's fine for cooling, and on a 2118 it can even help in hot weather. The downsides are a little extra 12V draw when you're dry camping, extra fan wear, and fan noise. If you'd like thermostatic control again, the Norcold fan thermostat 640235 does the same job, and you'll find the rest of the 2118 parts on our 2117/2118 parts page.
