Very likely, yes. A heating element that's starting to short to its metal sheath is the most common cause of a fridge tripping a GFI, especially on an older unit. With power off, check the element with an ohmmeter. Check both the resistance and whether either lead shows continuity to the metal case. Any reading to ground means it's bad. The AC Heating Element 621702 fits many older models and is in stock. Check your old element's wattage and voltage to confirm the match.
